What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis is a general term which means inflammation of the liver. Hepatitis B is caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This virus can be found in body fluids. This virus can be transmitted whenever body fluids come into contact with the broken skin of an uninfected person.

Who is at risk?

  • Other workers who might come into contact with body fluids including, sewage workers and those in emergency services.
  • People who might have injuries and come into contact with others with injuries.
  • Foster carers and people who live or work in accommodation for people with severe learning disabilities.
  • Prison staff and prison inmates are also at risk
  • Laboratory work forensic, research etc
  • First aiders
  • Local authority services (street cleaning/park maintenance/refuse disposal/public lavatory maintenance)

Is hepatitis B vaccine safe?

Yes. It is safe and works very well to prevent the disease. This vaccine has successfully been proven to prevent infection in people exposed to the virus.

How is the vaccine given?

A total of 3 doses of the vaccine are given over several months. The upper arm muscle is the preferred site of administration.

How effective is the vaccine?

This vaccine has successfully been proven to prevent infection in people exposed to the virus. After having the vaccine, your body will develop protective antibodies and subsequent immunity to hepatitis B virus infection.

The vaccine would only take a few minutes, you will be asked to remain in the reception for 10minutes.
